Azure SQL Database: Upgraded infrastructure for monitoring and alerts

Azure SQL Database is upgrading the infrastructure for monitoring and alerts. This upgrade will improve stability and lay the foundation for enabling next-generation alerts. The upgrade will take place from January 22, 2019 to January 28, 2019.  

 

How will this affect me?  

 

During this upgrade, there will be no change to metric data and charts available in the Azure portal. However, customers who are using the Azure Monitor REST API will no longer be able to query for metric data written before December 21, 2018.  

 

What do I need to do?  

 

If you need metric data before December 21, 2018, please make a copy of the data before January 21, 2019. Moving forward, metric history will be built up to 93 days and maintained as such.

Power BI Embedded Status API tracks workspace assignment to capacities

The Status API for Power BI Embedded checks the current assignment status of a workspace to a capacity (for example, CompletedSuccessfully). Checking the Status API is useful for:

  • Multi-geo for compliance: When you're assigning a new workspace to a capacity in a different region than your home tenant, moving all the data in the workspace might take time. This API call can help you check the status of this operation.
  • "Zero downtime" capacity scale: If you use the script we published last month, checking if the workspace has been moved between capacities can be helpful to make sure users have content available at all times, during scale-up, scale-down, or pause.

Public preview: Token-based identity for Azure AD users in SQL Database

Customers with data in Azure SQL Database can now manage users and their access to data in SQL Database when integrating with Power BI Embedded. This capability is in preview.

When you're generating the embed token, you can specify the effective identity of a user in SQL Database by passing the Azure AD access token to the server. The access token will be used to pull only the relevant data for that user from SQL Database, for that specific session.

Token-based identity can be used to manage each user’s view in SQL Database, or to sign in to SQL Database as a specific customer in a multitenant database. It can also be used to apply row-level security on that session in SQL Database and retrieve only the relevant data for that session, removing the need to manage row-level security in Power BI.

Power BI Embedded API for capacity workload configuration

Power BI REST APIs and SDKs automatically manage dataflows and workload settings for paginated reports on Power BI Embedded:

  • Get Workload returns the current state of a workload (for example, Enabled) and the maximum memory percentage that the workload can consume out of the total memory capacity.
  • Get Workloads returns the current state of specified capacity workloads. For each enabled workload, the API also returns the maximum memory percentage that the workload can consume.
  • Patch Workload changes the state of a specific workload to Enabled or Disabled. When you enable a workload, you must also set the maximum memory percentage that the workload can consume.
